Gemini CLI vs Replit: which should you start with?

A terminal coding agent from Google versus a browser-based coding platform whose Agent builds and publishes projects.

Verdict

Start with Replit if you want to build and publish a project in your browser with no local setup and a free mode to try. Pick Gemini CLI if you prefer working on your own computer, in your own editor, with an open-source agent.

Gemini CLI runs in your terminal and edits code on your own computer. Replit is a browser-based coding platform whose AI Agent builds, runs and publishes projects from a description.

A note on Gemini CLI's cost

Its README says free individual access and Google AI Pro / Ultra plans moved to Google's Antigravity CLI on 18 June 2026, which Google's Developers Blog confirms. See our Antigravity CLI getting started guide. Gemini CLI now covers Gemini API keys (usage-based billing), Vertex AI and Gemini Code Assist Standard / Enterprise licences. Free use is unconfirmed.

Key differences

Setup. Replit needs no local setup, and the Agent builds, runs and publishes in one place. Gemini CLI needs a terminal and a project on your machine.

Control. Gemini CLI lets you keep your own editor and tools. Replit is less suited to people who want to work in their own local editor.

Who should pick what

  • You're new to coding and want everything in one place: Replit. See our Replit Agent guide.
  • You work locally and like open source: Gemini CLI.

Our verdict

Replit is the all-in-one browser start. Gemini CLI is the open-source, terminal-based choice. See also Claude Code vs Replit.
