Gemini CLI
Google's open-source AI agent for your terminal. It reads your project, edits files and runs commands using Gemini models, while you steer in plain English.
Pricing
The Gemini CLI README says free individual access and Google AI Pro / Ultra plans moved to Google's Antigravity CLI on 18 June 2026, and Google's Developers Blog confirms it. See our Antigravity CLI tool page at /tools/antigravity-cli and the guide at /guides/antigravity-cli-getting-started. Gemini CLI itself now covers Gemini API keys (usage-based billing), Vertex AI and Gemini Code Assist Standard / Enterprise licences. Google's quota page still lists some free-tier API key limits, so details are unclear. Check the Gemini CLI docs and Google's pricing pages before you rely on any free use.
Pros
- Open source under the Apache 2.0 licence
- Installs with npm (npm install -g @google/gemini-cli), Homebrew or npx, with no install step if you use npx
- GEMINI.md files give it standing instructions for a project
- MCP servers are set up in ~/.gemini/settings.json
- Can run without a chat window in scripts using gemini -p
Cons
- Lives in the terminal, so there is a learning curve if you have never used one
- The free and Google AI plan access it was known for has moved to a different Google product, so older tutorials may not match
- Reads AGENTS.md only if you set that up in its settings
