These two aren't really rivals. Gemini CLI is a coding agent that works inside a project folder from the terminal. Claude Desktop is a chat app you install and sign in to, with connectors to tools like calendars and documents.

A note on Gemini CLI's cost
Its README says free individual access and Google AI Pro / Ultra plans moved to Google's Antigravity CLI on 18 June 2026, which Google's Developers Blog confirms. See our Antigravity CLI getting started guide. Gemini CLI now covers Gemini API keys (usage-based billing), Vertex AI and Gemini Code Assist Standard / Enterprise licences. Free use is unconfirmed, so check Google's docs.
Key differences
Purpose. Gemini CLI reads files, edits code and runs commands. Claude Desktop is for conversations, and its connectors link Claude to things like calendars and project trackers. Connectors can read or change data in your accounts, so review what you grant.
Setup. Claude Desktop is a normal app. Gemini CLI is installed with npm install -g @google/gemini-cli, Homebrew or run with npx.
Who should pick what
- You don't write code, or want a chat helper: Claude Desktop. See Claude Desktop connectors for non-coders.
- You want AI to change code in a project: Gemini CLI.
Our verdict
Choose by job: Claude Desktop for chat and connectors, Gemini CLI for coding in the terminal. Many people could use both.
