Antigravity CLI vs Gemini CLI: which should you use?

Two terminal agents from Google. Antigravity CLI is the newer one and the home for personal Google accounts. Gemini CLI carries on for API keys and Code Assist licences.

Verdict

If you sign in with a personal Google account, free or on a Google AI Pro or Ultra plan, use Antigravity CLI, because Google says Gemini CLI stopped serving those accounts on 18 June 2026. Keep using Gemini CLI if you work through a Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise licence, Google Cloud, or a paid Gemini API key, or if you want an Apache 2.0 open-source tool.

Antigravity CLI and Gemini CLI are both terminal agents from Google. You open a terminal in your project folder, describe a change in plain English, and the agent reads files, proposes edits and runs commands. They are closely related: Google announced on its Developers Blog that it is unifying its efforts around the Antigravity platform, and that Antigravity CLI takes over for some Gemini CLI users.

What changed on 18 June 2026

Google's announcement says that on 18 June 2026, Gemini CLI stopped serving requests for Google AI Pro and Ultra users, and for people using it free of charge. Those tiers are now supported through Antigravity CLI. Google also says access stays unchanged for:

  • teams using Gemini CLI through a Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise licence, or through Google Cloud
  • people using paid Gemini API keys (and Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform API keys)

The Gemini CLI repository also says it stays available as an Apache 2.0 open-source project.

How they feel to use

Very similar at first glance. You type a request, the agent works out which files matter, shows what it wants to change and asks before risky steps. In Antigravity CLI the default is to show an inline diff and ask you to accept each file edit.

The newer tool is built in Go and, per Google, shares its engine with the Antigravity desktop app (Antigravity 2.0). Google says the CLI is tuned for speed and low overhead, and that sessions can be viewed in the desktop app too. It also has extra commands such as /plan, /fork, /schedule and /usage.

Features that carry over

Google says Antigravity CLI keeps the most critical Gemini CLI features: Agent Skills, Hooks, Subagents and extensions, which are now called Antigravity plugins. It also says there isn't one-to-one feature parity yet, and that some custom themes may not carry over.

Moving from Gemini CLI

Google's migration guide covers the main steps:

  • Your GEMINI.md and AGENTS.md files keep working.
  • agy plugin import gemini converts Gemini CLI extensions into plugins.
  • MCP servers need moving by hand into the new mcp_config.json files, and a remote server's address goes in serverUrl.
  • Skills in a project's .gemini/skills/ need moving to .agents/skills/.

Our Antigravity CLI getting started guide walks through this.

Where Antigravity CLI is stronger

  • Personal Google accounts. This is where free, Pro and Ultra access now lives.
  • Newer features. It has commands for planning, forking a session, scheduling tasks and checking usage.
  • Shared with the desktop app. One engine and settings across surfaces.

Where Gemini CLI is stronger

  • Open source. Gemini CLI is Apache 2.0 licensed. Google's Antigravity CLI docs don't state a licence.
  • Mature and familiar. Many existing tutorials describe it, although those may not match the current account rules.
  • Works for API keys and licences out of the box. No extra setting is needed for a Gemini API key.

Who should pick what

  • Personal Google account, free or Pro/Ultra: Antigravity CLI.
  • Work Code Assist licence or Google Cloud project: either works. Check what your organisation approves.
  • Paid Gemini API key and you want open source: Gemini CLI.
  • Already using Gemini CLI and happy: check that your sign-in method is still served, then decide when to move.

Our verdict

For most individuals the choice is made for them: Antigravity CLI is where personal Google accounts now go. Keep Gemini CLI for API keys, enterprise licences and the open-source repo. See also our Gemini CLI tool page, Antigravity CLI tool page, and the comparisons with Claude Code and OpenAI Codex.
